
Human Rights Studies for 21st Century Californians Project Hosts Fresno Workshop for Teachers

UC Davis Human Rights Studies, in collaboration with The History Project at UC Davis, and CSU Fresno hosted 10 high-school educators for a weekend-long workshop as part of the “Human Rights Studies for 21st Century Californians” project. Pivoting quickly to online, Director of Human Rights Studies, Keith David Watenpaugh, with collaborators, History Project's Stacy Greer and Fresno State Asst. Prof. of German and Ethnic Humanities, Amila Becirbegovic, led teachers through discussions of the origins of the contemporary human rights system in the aftermath of the Second World War, the development of the Genocide Convention, the uses of popular culture in the teaching of the Holocaust and other genocides, and an exploration of the global struggle to end Apartheid as a way to understand the larger repertoire of international human rights action.
Support by the University of California Humanities Research Institute and the Davis Humanities Institute, the goal of the project is develop a state-wide resource to support k-14 educators seeking to integrate Human Rights Studies into their classrooms. Additional workshops will be held in San Diego and Los Angles this coming Spring.
